Bob Stoops left so abruptly last summer that he didn’t give Oklahoma time to give him a proper sendoff. That was exactly how he wanted it, but still. Just as funerals are for the living and not the deceased, Oklahoma never got to properly celebrate the 18-year tenure that saw the Sooners win one national title and one Big 12 championship for every finger after Stoops retired in the summer of 2017, so they’re doing it now.

Saturday’s spring game is officially the Bob Stoops Bowl, with former Stoops standouts Adrian Peterson and Trent Williams serving as honorary coaches.

So what does this have to do with a shirtless Mike Gundy?

The Sooners hosted a celebratory dinner on Friday night, with pre-recorded farewell messages coming from various figures scattered through the Stoops era. One of those happened to be Gundy, the hands-down greatest coach in Oklahoma State history who nevertheless went 2-10 against Stoops.

The biggest celebrities in Oklahoma this side of Russell Westbrook, Stoops and Gundy’s relationship transcended football, as you can clearly see here.

We all know what this means, right? Someday Gundy will retire, Oklahoma State will throw a similar shindig in his honor, and now Stoops is going to have to take his shirt off, too.
