Once none of the teams with openings that became available in-season didn't pull the trigger on Bill Belichick (Jets, Bears, and Saints) before the season came to a close, it seemed inevitable that teams that found themselves with a head coaching vacancy later on would make calls to Belichick.
Turns out, that's exactly what's happening.
Belichick has spent the opening few days of the recruiting contact period in uncharted territory visiting recruits and coaches as the new leader of North Carolina's football program.
Now, with just under a month behind him as a college head coach, NFL teams are reportedly kicking the tires on if the six-time Super Bowl winning head coach is really set on coaching at the college level.
Tom Pelissero was among the national reporters to share the news that multiple teams have been gauging his interest, adding that the Raiders - who recently fired Antonio Pierce after one full season at the helm - were among them.
New Raiders minority owner Tom Brady recently spoke with his former head coach about what it would take to make a reunion happen, Pelissero adds.
If Belichick were to leave for any NFL team before June, the five-year deal he signed back in December in Chapel Hill states that he would owe a $10 million buyout.
That buyout drops to $1 million on or after June 1, 2025 for the 72-year old.
The veteran Patriots head coach made over $200 million during his tenure in New England, according to a recent piece in Forbes.
While the Raiders may be the most obvious connection, Pelissero adds at least one other team has also continued to check in on Belichick's status.
As a reminder, six NFL jobs are currently open - the Jets, Saints, Bears, Jags, Patriots and Raiders - and it's probably safe to cross off the opening in New England.
For those thinking that there's no way Belichick would leave after just a month on the job at UNC, it's worth reminding that he resigned on the day of his introductory presser as the head coach of the New York Jets in 2000, famously writing his resignation on a napkin, citing uncertainties with the team's ownership.
Last year, the Falcons interviewed Belichick at least twice before opting to hire Raheem Morris.
Update>> Diani Russini shares that Belichick has no plans to return to the NFL and his sole focus is coaching and recruiting for the Tar Heels.

I’m told his sole focus is on coaching and recruiting for North Carolina, as he continues building the Tar Heels’ future. He’s recruiting today in New Jersey.
Further Update >> North Carolina GM Mike Lombardi called the recent NFL interest in Bill Belichick "a complete falsehood" on The Pat McAfee show today.
"Bill Belichick is completely committed to North Carolina..
— Pat McAfee (@PatMcAfeeShow) January 9, 2025
That story about him going to the NFL was a complete falsehood and that story had no legs"
