Murray State head coach Dean Hood set to retire
A new year will bring new beginnings at Murray State (FCS - KY), as Dean Hood has decided to retire as the leader of the Racers.
Hood spent the last four seasons leading the Murray State program.
Athletic director Nico Yantko shared the following statement on the decision:
"Earlier this morning, head football coach Dean Hood informed me that he will be departing Murray State and retiring from coaching. I want to personally thank Coach Hood for his leadership over the past four years and for being a positive influence on the lives of so many of our Racer student-athletes. I know all of Racer Nation joins me in thanking Coach Hood, his wife Crystal, his two sons, Trey and Daven, and his two daughters, Jada and Cordia, for everything they have done for our University and community, and we wish them all the best with this new endeavor."
The move comes after a second straight 2-9 season.
Overall, Hood had a 15-25 record leading the program. In his first two seasons he racked up 11 wins following a 5-2 campaign in 2020 followed by a 6-5 finish in 2021.
A longtime staple of the college coaching community, Hood took over the Murray State program after a few seasons as special teams coordinator and defensive assistant at Kentucky from 2017-19.
He spent his first year in Lexington working with the outside linebackers before moving to defensive backs in his final two seasons.
Prior to that, he spent a few seasons at Charlotte as assistant head coach / tight ends coach.
From 2008-15 Hood was the head coach at Eastern Kentucky, where he compiled a 55-38 record, two Ohio Valley Conference titles, and three trips to the FCS playoffs.
He retires with a career 70-63 record as head coach.
Please join us in wishing all the best for coach Hood in whatever this next chapter of his life has in store.
