NCAA issues new interpretation to close the Dan Lanning Loophole (NCAA 12 Men Penalty)

The NCAA Football Rules Committee on Wednesday issued a new intepretation to AR 9-2-3 II, more commonly known as the Dan Lanning Loop Hole.

As you well know by now, Lanning and company all but deliberately put 12 defenders on the field as Ohio State attempted to drive for a game-winning field goal in last Saturday's game. The extra man forced Ohio State quarterback Will Howard to throw to a covered receiver, and so Oregon gladly traded five yards for the four seconds it took for the play to elapse, nearly half of the 10 remaining seconds in the game.

On the ensuing play, Howard ran forward and used all six remaining seconds, thereby securing Oregon's 32-31 victory and etching the Dan Lanning Loop Hole into game management legend.

And that's where it will stay, as the NCAA issued a new guidance that, effective immediately, offenses will now have the option to restore the clock to the original time when the defense puts 12 men on the field within the final two minutes of each half.
