NCAA to shrink transfer portal windows (Ncaa Transfer Portal)

The NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday moved to shrink the transfer portal windows to 45 days in all sports. The move is not yet final until the Council concludes its meeting later today, but in years of covering NCAA business I can't recall a rule change being announced but not implemented.

For football, the 45-day window will be split as follows:

-- 30 days immediately following the season
-- 15 days following spring football

The previous Portal window was 60 days: 45 days after the season and 15 after spring.

The Division I Council initially wanted to cut the total window in half, from 60 days to 30, but the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advised for a 45-day period.

Student-athletes also have 30 days to enter the Portal in the event of a head coaching change or if their financial aid is canceled.

Athletes do not have to choose a new destination within the 45-day window, they simply must enter the Portal during that time in order to be immediately eligible to compete the following season, provided it is their first time to transfer as an undergraduate
