Nebraska awards significant raise to defensive coordinator Tony White (Tony White Nebraska)

Nebraska has awarded a significant raise to defensive coordinator Tony White, the program announced Friday.

White will remain under contract for the next two seasons, but he will now earn a $1.6 million salary after taking home $1 million in 2023. That's a 60 percent raise, according to my calculations.

Also Nebraska's associate head coach, White was a candidate for the open USC defensive coordinator position and also the San Diego State head coaching vacancy, where he coached from 2009-17.

“Tony White has all the attributes you look for in a coordinator or assistant coach,” Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule said. “He builds great relationships with his players and fellow coaches and is an elite teacher and communicator. We made great strides on defense this past season, and I look forward to continuing to work with Tony as we move forward and build this program.”

Nebraska noted that 2023 was "its best defensive performance in the Big Ten era." The Huskers permitted 4.62 yards per play and 18.3 points per game, nearly a full yard per-play and 10 points per game improvement from 2022 and, indeed, the best numbers since the program joined the Big Ten in 2011. In fact, it's the first season in which Nebraska held opponents under five yards per play and 20 points per game.

“I am proud of what our players accomplished this year and am excited to build on that success moving forward,” White said. “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to coach at Nebraska, and to work for a great leader in Coach Rhule, and I feel honored to work alongside our defensive staff every day. Go Big Red!”
