New York Jets announce leadership decision for 2024
Head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas will return in 2024, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson confirmed on Sunday.
Saleh's three seasons have been marred by poor quarterback play. The club drafted Zach Wilson No. 2 overall ahead of Saleh's first season. The Jets then acquired Aaron Rodgers, who promptly tore his Achilles on his fourth play as a Jet.
The Jets should be a popular playoff pick in 2024, provided their 40-year-old quarterback's Achilles heals (pun intended.)
“My decision is to keep them,” Johnson told the New York Post. “I think we’ve had some very positive moves. The culture of the team is a lot better. The defense is better. The offense needs a few pieces. . . . Just to keep the continuity going with Aaron and the team we’ve got. Like I said a year ago, we need a quarterback. We had a quarterback for four plays. Since then we haven’t been able to replace him. If we have a good quarterback, it makes everybody’s job easier. It makes the line better, the receivers better.”
The Jets are 17-32 under Saleh and 26-55 under Douglas, but that's par for the course for Gang Green. The 2023 season will be the club's 13th consecutive season without reaching the playoffs.
