The New York Jets are interviewing Maryland head coach Mike Locksley on Friday, the team announced today.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first shared the news.
Locksley, 55, has never coached or played in the NFL. After playing defensive back for Towson from 1988-91, he went to work for his alma mater and has remained in the college game ever since. He's 32-36 (15-35 Big Ten) in six seasons as Maryland's full-time head coach. After three straight bowl wins from 2021-23, the Terrapins back slid to 4-8 this fall.
Rapoport notes that the Jets "expansive" search is leaving "no stone unturned." The club's own GM/head coach tracker notes they've interviewed seven different general manager candidates and five head coaching candidates, and the net is going to get wider before it gets smaller.
One of the most historically inept franchises in the NFL, since the club's 1960 founding, three coaches have left with a .500 record or better:
-- Sammy Baugh, 14-14 from 1960-61
-- Bill Parcells, 29-19 from 1997-99
-- Al Groh, 9-7 in 2000
As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
