NFL owners have approved a proposal incentivizing development of minority coaches (NFL)

Earlier today, the NFL announced that team owners have approved a proposal aimed at incentivizing the development of minority coaches and executives.

The creative new incentive aims at rewarding organizations that are doing outstanding jobs of preparing their minority coaches and execs to climb the ladder by providing two third-round compensatory picks in the NFL Draft if that organization loses a minority employee to a head coach or general manger job.

Let's take Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, one of the hottest names on the coaching market for the last several years, for an example. If he were to land an NFL head coaching job this off season, the Chiefs would receive a pick at the end of the third rounds in 2021 and 2022. In the event that a club had both a coach leave for a head coaching job and front office exec chosen for a GM job, the organization would get three total third-round compensatory picks.

In order to receive the pick, the minority employee has to have been employed with the organization for a minimum of two years.

There were a number of other proposals that have been brought up over the years that were shot down for one reason or another, but this is the one that those involved decided to champion and push through the process, and it's not hard to see why. This one stood out because it wasn't about simply interviewing a minority candidate, the emphasis was instead put on developing coaches and potential future general mangers. That's what made it different.

NFL executive Troy Vincent states that this resolution compliments "the overall collection of things we're doing to try to increase mobility among, in particular, black coaches, and females as well."

Tom Pelissero provided a look at the full approved proposal, which you can see below.
