Last May news began to circulate that Noel Mazzone was attempting something unprecedented - he was going to be the offensive coordinator at two places during the same season.
At least, that was the plan initially.
Mazzone was serving as the offensive coordinator for spring practices at Higley (AZ) and also planned to call the offense at Scottsdale Chaparral (AZ) as well. One program practices in the morning, while the other went in the evenings, making the arrangement possible in the first place.
However, while Higley head coach Eddy Zubey (a friend of Mazzone's) was fine with Mazzone doing double-duty, Chaparral's Doug Nisenson was not as on board, according to a piece last May by AZ Central.
To make a long story short, after ruffling some feathers, Mazzone called the whole thing a misunderstanding.
Now, Mazzone is heading to another Arizona power to be their offensive coordinator.
Hamilton HS (AZ) announced Mazzone as their new offensive coordinator yesterday.
With Mazzone, they're getting someone who has literally called plays on offense from coast to coast on the major college stage, with coordinator stops at Ole Miss (twice), Auburn, Oregon State, NC State, Arizona State, UCLA, Texas A&M, and Arizona.
Hamilton is a program that has historically churned out top talent. They're graduating two top 50 players in the state in their 2024 class, and has a lineman (Toby Mealer) ranked among the top 25 recruits in the 2025 class in-state.
In 2022 they had six football players commit to Division I schools, and in the fall they were placed on probation for recruiting violations that led to a multi-game suspension for an assistant coach on staff and a postseason ban.
Now they'll take the field with one of the most respected play callers in all of football.
