North Carolina A&T has hired Fort Valley State head coach Shawn Gibbs to lead its program, the school announced Friday.
Gibbs spent 11 season as North Carolina A&T's running backs coach and special teams coordinator under two different head coaches before taking the head job at Fort Valley State, a Division II HBCU in Fort Valley, Ga.
Inheriting a team that went 5-5 the year prior to his arrival, Gibbs went 22-9 in three seasons leading the Wildcats. He replaces Vincent Brown, who went 2-21 with the Aggies.
"I want to welcome back Coach Gibbs to North Carolina A&T State University," said AD Earl Hilton. "We are excited for his return. A&T fans certainly have fond memories of the outstanding job he did coaching some of the best players in our school's history while also maintaining a high level of respect from those same players. Shawn's coaching history is very impressive."
Gibbs posted 8-win campaigns in 2022-23, the first time FVSU posted consecutive 8-win seasons in 24 years.
"It is a dream come true for me to accept the position as head football coach at North Carolina A&T State University," Gibbs said. "My family and I are thrilled to return home to Greensboro, a community with such a special place in our hearts."
