Head coach of Texas high school superpower joining Rice staff (Jon Kay)

Galena Park North Shore (Texas) High School head coach Jon Kay is leaving the school to coach linebackers at Rice, according to Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

Kay has been the head coach of the Houston-area superpower since 2014. He leaves the school with a 117-18 record in nine seasons, including eight district titles, five births in the state championship game and four state titles. All of North Shore's titles came in the Class 6A Division I bracket, the largest in Texas and rated by MaxPreps as the most difficult championship to win in all of high school football.

The 2018 title was immediately etched into Texas high school football lore, with Kay's Mustangs defeating Duncanville on a Hail Mary on the final play of the game.

At Rice, Kay will be expected to coach linebackers while also forging and strengthening relationships with high school coaches in the Greater Houston area and across the state.

The Owls are 16-39 heading into head coach Mike Bloomgren's sixth season. Rice qualified for its first bowl trip under Bloomgren in 2022 and will step up into the American in '23.
