Ohio is set to add a veteran defensive presence to their staff.
Pete Thamel shares this morning that former San Diego State defensive coordinator Kurt Mattix is joining the staff as defensive ends coach.
Mattix led a number of defenses during his time on The Mesa that ranked among the top 20 in a number of defensive categories including turnovers, total defense, rush defense, and a number of other key metrics.
A former Broyles Award nominee in 2020, Mattix coordinated the defense at Eastern Kentucky (FCS) prior to heading west. In his last two seasons with the Colonels he had one of the top defenses in the ultra-tough Ohio Valley Conference, as well as the entire FCS.
Earlier in his career, Mattix spent time on staffs at Ball State, Valparaiso (FCS - IN), Trine (D-III - IN) and Anderson (D-III - IN).
