During their game tomorrow against UAB, Louisiana-Lafayette will honor their late offensive line coach DJ Looney.
Instead of their own last name, every player will wear the name of their beloved coach across the back of their jerseys.
Honoring Looney while playing in his hometown makes the gesture even more touching. Head coach Billy Napier believes that many members of Looney's family will be in attendance.
Napier told the Advocate, “This guy made a significant impact. That’s what it’s about. I know we’re all thankful and better because we knew DJ and we wanted to do something special. This game presented a little bit of a unique opportunity.”
Looney passed away suddenly on August 1 from a heart attack. He was only 31 years old.
He is remembered by friends, family and colleagues as a charismatic person, passionate coach and genuine friend.
What a fitting tribute.
