Pete Thamel tweets tonight that one name is "picking up steam" in the Arizona head coaching search.
That name, Thamel shares, is San Jose State head coach Brent Brennan.
Brennan, in his fourth season leading the program, just completed a 7-0 season and earned home field advantage for the Mountain West title over the weekend, where they beat Boise State to capture the crown.
Their performance against Mountain West power Boise State last night in a 34-20 win clearly added some steam to the Brennan support train.
The transformation of the San Jose State program has been one of the best stories in college football this year. In his first two years, Brennan and the Spartans went 3-22 and in year three they made the jump to 5-7 before making the jump to 7-0 in this COVID shortened season of 2020.
Before taking his first head coaching job at San Jose State, Brennan coached the wide receivers at Oregon State, where he developed a number of NFL players. Before his stop in Corvallis, Brennan racked up a number of season as an assistant at San Jose State working his way from wide receivers, to tight ends, eventually to offensive coordinator from 2005-2010.
In previous updates in Tuscon we've shared that Navy's Ken Nuimatalolo is a familiar name to the search that has returned, and immediately following the dismissal of Kevin Sumlin back in early December, we laid out a number of other names (including Brennan).
We'll have an update in the coming days on what we're hearing at Arizona.
