Gus Malzahn's first hire was to bring Travis Williams on board as his defensive coordinator, and now it appears that he has a co-coordinator to pair him with.
Bruce Feldman tweets that Missouri secondary coach David Gibbs is expected to join the staff as co-defensive coordinator.
Gibbs is the former defensive coordinator at Texas Tech (2015-18), Houston (2013-14), Auburn (2005), and Minnesota (1997-2000). Back in 1997, Gibbs was the youngest coordinator in major college football at Minnesota under Glen Mason.
He has been on the Missouri staff since 2019 working with the corners.
In an interesting twist, Gibbs was actually the defensive coordinator at Auburn while new UCF defensive coordinator Travis Williams was a linebacker for the program. Now he's tasked with being his former player's right hand man.
Gibbs, who has spent his entire career working with the secondary, also has a wealth of NFL experience working with the Broncos, Chiefs, and Texans since the early 2000's.
In his lone head coaching experience, as the interim head coach for Houston in the 2015 Armed Forces Bowl, Gibbs helped engineer the biggest fourth quarter comeback in bowl history as the Cougars staged a big comeback with 29 fourth-quarter points to beat Pitt 35-34.
