Philadelphia Eagles make in-season coordinator change

After allowing 75 combined points to San Francisco and Dallas, Nick Sirianni has reportedly demoted defensive coordinator Sean Desai.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has demoted defensive coordinator Sean Desai and handed control of the defense to former New England Patriots defensive coordinator and Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia, according to a report Sunday from Fox's Jay Glazer.

The move comes after two straight blowout losses to Philadelphia's chief competition in the NFC: the Eagles lost 42-19 to San Francisco on Dec. 3, and lost 33-13 to Dallas last Sunday.

The defending NFC champions are 10-3 on the season, but surrendered 34 points in an overtime win over Buffalo on Nov. 26, and allowed 31 points in both games with Washington, although the Eagles were victorious both times.

Desai joined the Eagles last season as associate head coach and a defensive assistant, and was promoted to coordinator after Jonathan Gannon landed the head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals. The report does not specify Desai's new duties following the demotion.

Patricia joined the club this season as a senior defensive assistant. He spent 14 seasons in New England, the final six as defensive coordinator, before landing the head coaching job in Detroit. He spent 2021-22 in a variety of roles, including co-offensive coordinator, with the Patriots.

Philadelphia visits Seattle on Monday night (8:15 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN).
