Report: The Steelers considering other candidates for offensive coordinator (Matt Canada)

After stumbling down the stretch, Mike Tomlin made a number of moves on his staff, including letting offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner go. Fichtner had been with Tomlin since the 2007 season, serving as offensive coordinator the past three.

This past Saturday Ian Rapoport reported that Steelers quarterbacks coach Matt Canada was expected to get the bump to offensive coordinator.

The #Steelers are expected to promote QB coach Matt Canada to offensive coordinator, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. A creative mind originally from the college game, Canada also interviewed with the #Dolphins but now stays in Pittsburgh.

" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Canada is the former LSU, Maryland, and Pitt offensive coordinator that spent 12 games leading the Terps program as the interim head coach in 2018. He sat out 2019 before taking the quarterbacks job under Mike Tomlin heading into to the 2020 season. However, this morning a report emerged that the Steelers are considering other options. Diana Russini of ESPN, notes that a deal to make Canada the team's offensive coordinator may not be the case after all. Russini shares that the Steelers interviewed former Browns head coach Hue Jackson earlier this week for that offensive coordinator position. Taking all that into account, the timing would suggest that the decision on the position has not yet been made. While his time leading the Browns to a 3-36 mark over two-plus seasons wasn't what the Cleveland faithful had hoped for, he has had success as an offensive coordinator during college stops at Cal and USC, and in the NFL with stops with stints with the Redskins, Falcons, Raiders, and Bengals over the last few decades. We'll keep you updated as more becomes clear on this one. Stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.

Thursday evening update>

Appears the Steelers are interested in speaking with Pep Hamilton now as well....
