Another FBS Independent has decided to cancel their fall season

Update >> UMass has announced the decision.

โ€œWe remain hopeful and fully intend to conduct a competitive schedule for our fall sports in the 2021 spring semester," athletic director Ryan Bolland shared.

According to multiple reports this morning, UMass has decided to cancel their fall season.

Like UConn - who was the first FBS program to cancel their plans for a fall season last week after finding themselves with a handful of open dates on their schedule that were going to be increasingly more difficult to fill with Power Five leagues opting to play conference schedules - UMass is also an FBS Independent.

Along with UConn, UMass now joins the ranks of Old Dominion among the list of schools who have decided to punt on their fall seasons and hope to play in the spring. The Monarchs announced yesterday that they decided to not play any fall sports. The MAC and MWC have also decided to not play this fall as well.

All told, the UMass news means that 27 out of 130 programs will not take the field this fall due to COVID concerns.
