After clinching a championship berth in the final season as a member of the American Athletic Conference, Rhett Lashlee has agreed to a multi-year extension at SMU.
Billy Embody of On3 shares that the extension comes with a raise that would put Lashlee "on par" with coaches in the ACC, where SMU is set to begin play in 2024 as a new member.
The report also shares that the salary pool for assistant coaches will be within the top 25 in college football, which would put them in the $7 million per year ballpark.
As a private school, SMU is not required to share salary figures.
After crushing Navy 59-14 on Saturday to go to 10-2 on the year, SMU appeared in the AP poll for the first time this season, coming in at #25.
With the move to the ACC, a top 25 ranking, and set to move into a new football operations building that has a price tag in the $150 million range this summer, Lashlee and SMU have a ton of momentum going into the off season where recruiting and the transfer portal will be key to sustained success.
In his first season leading the program, Lashlee led SMU to a 7-6 season with a loss in the New Mexico bowl to end the year.
He is 17-8 as the head coach of the Mustangs with a conference title game and bowl game left to play this season.
Lashlee will lead his top-25 SMU squad into the AAC title game against Tulane this weekend at 4pm EST on ABC.
