Ryan Day goes off on Lou Holtz in post-game interview after Ohio State beats Notre Dame (Ryan Day)

No. 6 Ohio State beat No. 9 Notre Dame 17-14 on a 1-yard run on (essentially) the last play of the game, and afterward a fiery Ryan Day went off on former Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz for questioning his team's toughness.

"I'd like to know where Lou Holtz is right now," Day said on the field where Holtz used to coach. "What he said about our team, I cannot believe. This is a tough team right here. We're proud to be from Ohio. It's always been Ohio against the world, and it'll continue to be Ohio against the world. But I'll tell you what: I love those kids. We've got a tough team."

In an appearance on Pat McAfee's show on Friday, Holtz said Notre Dame would out-tough the Buckeyes.

“He has lost to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Michigan twice — and everybody who beats them does so because they’re more physical than Ohio State,” Holtz said. “I think Notre Dame will take that same approach.”

“Forget who in the hell we’re playing,” Holtz said later. “You take this message to Ohio State: You tell them better bring your lunch because it’s going to be a full damn day’s work.”

Ohio State built a 10-0 lead in the third quarter, but Notre Dame took a 14-10 lead with 8:22 to play. The Buckeyes moved in position to take the lead, but a 3rd-and-1 carry by running back TreVeyon Henderson was stuffed for no gain at the Irish 11-yard line. On 4th-and-1, Ohio State ran outside, and wide receiver Emeka Egbuka was stopped for no gain.

Ohio State's defense then forced a punt, and Buckeye quarterback Kyle McCord again put his team on the doorstep with a 21-yard completion on 3rd-and-19 from the Notre Dame 22 with 15 seconds to play. Two passes from the 1 fell incomplete, but Chip Trayanum charged in on a do-or-die carry with three seconds to play in the game, securing a 17-14 Ohio State win that Holtz did not see coming.
