Sam Houston promotes rising star John Johnson to assistant head coach (John Johnson Coach)

Sam Houston has promoted running backs coach John Johnson to running backs coach heading into his third season on the staff.

Johnson played at Oklahoma State and Ouchita Baptist, where his coaching career began in 2009. He spent the 2021 campaign as an analyst with the Cowboys.

Previous stops include South Dakota State, where he helped develop future NFL running backs Pierre Strong, Jr., and Isaiah Davis, Tulsa, Missouri Southern State, Oklahoma Baptist, and with the Alliance of American Football's Atlanta Legends.

Ironically, Johnson coached against Sam Houston as the Bearkats won the 2020 FCS national championship in May of 2021.

Sam Houston is preparing for its second season of FBS membership and its 11th under head coach KC Keeler. The Bearkats kick off the 2024 campaign Aug. 31 at Rice.
