College football is a funny, unique business, and every once in a while we get a reminder of just how funny.
In a multi-billion dollar industry, with its major brands generating hundreds of millions per year, in games watched by tens of millions of people, every once in a while the whole thing will depend on the leg of what essentially amounts to a volunteer.
That's been the case at Texas these past two seasons. The kicker with a funny name and a funnier haircut has come through in clutch moments before: knocking in a 49-yard field goal to put the Longhorns ahead of No. 1 Alabama with 1:29 to play in 2022, and then booting a 47-yarder to give UT a 30-27 lead over Oklahoma with 1:17 remaining in last year's Red River game. The Texas defense wasn't able to hold either lead, but that doesn't diminish the magnitude of the kicks in those moments -- and he did so as a walk-on.
Auburn connected on 50-of-61 field goals and all 114 extra points while essentially paying to be part of the team. But no longer.
In his first team meeting with the full 2024 roster, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian put Auburn on scholarship on Sunday night.

Not the same pomp and circumstance as some other #ScholarshipAlerts -- no pomp and circumstance, in fact -- but the end result is the same.
