In his Football Morning in America column on Monday, Peter King reports Adam Sandler's production company, Happy Madison Productions, is in production on a film centered around Sean Payton's year-long suspension from the NFL.
Imagine this: The plotline begins in 2012, when Payton is suspended for the season by commissioner Roger Goodell for the Saints’ bounty scandal, which gives Payton the chance to re-assess his life and put it in some perspective. As part of his new life, Payton becomes the offensive coach for his son Connor’s sixth-grade football team, the Warriors, in the Dallas area. (Thus, the “Home Team” title of the flick.) Filming of the movie begins this year. Payton read the script recently, made some corrections, and here it comes.
Payton will be played by Kevin James, who played football himself at SUNY Cortland.
Netflix actually announced the project back in February, though a director or star wasn't attached at the time. Filming is expected to begin next month in New Orleans and Los Angeles.
The Saints' coach's NFL-mandated sabbatical has long been the source of fascination. Perhaps they'll be a role for a Bill Parcells cameo, played by a white-haired Sandler.
