Sources: SMU to promote D'Eriq King to quarterbacks coach (SMU Football Coaching Staff)

SMU is set to promote D'Eriq King to quarterbacks coach, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Wednesday. The news was first reported by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

Sources confirm the move to FootballScoop.

King is currently an offensive analyst for the reigning American Athletic Conference champions, having joined the staff after a brief professional career. He'll replace Jonathan Brewer, who took the same job on Manny Diaz's new Duke staff.

A Houston-area product, King started his college career in 2016 as a wide receiver at Houston, then transitioned to quarterback, where he became an all-conference performer in 2018 when he accounted for 50 total touchdowns (36 passing/14 rushing) in just 11 games.

King was in some ways the ultimate case study for how rapidly college football changed in a short amount of time.

He appeared in four games to begin the 2019 season, then took advantage of the still-new-at-the-time redshirt rules, and sat out the remainder of the '19 season while remaining a senior.

King then transferred to Miami and competed immediately, throwing for 23 touchdowns for the Hurricanes while rushing for four more in 2020. Since that year did not count against his -- or anyone's -- eligibility, he returned to Miami for a third shot at his senior year in 2021. And since that happened to mark the beginning of the new NIL rules in college football, King became the "first" athlete of the NIL era, serving as the pitch man for a number of companies in deals announced July 1, 2021.

King spent 2022 as a practice squad member of the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers, then played for the DC Defenders of the XFL before joining Rhett Lashlee, his coordinator at Miami, over the summer

Having transferred from the AAC to the ACC himself, King will now help SMU make the same journey. After winning their first conference title since 1984, the Mustangs will join the ACC in 2024.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
