Source: Clancy Pendergast expected to be USC's defensive coordinator (Featured)

Barring any contractual issues, USC is expected to hire Clancy Pendergast as its defensive coordinator, a source told FootballScoop Wednesday.

Oregon is also highly interested in Pendergast as well should negotiations with USC fall through.

Pendergast, 48, has spent the majority of his career in the NFL. Of the 11 jobs and 25 years Pendergast has deposited in the coaching industry, six of those gigs and 17 of those years were spent in the League. But when in the college game, Pendergast has most commonly officed out of Heritage Hall.

He served as a graduate assistant in 1992 and then returned as defensive coordinator in 2013 -- a year in which the Trojans ranked 13th nationally in total defense and 20th in yards per play allowed. USC hasn't ranked higher than 45th in either of those categories over the past two seasons.

Pendergast spent the 2014-15 seasons as the San Francisco 49ers' linebackers coach.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
