Chad Lunsford continues to fortify his Georgia Southern staff with assistant coaches steeped in the program's long history.
Sources tell FootballScoop on Friday that Lunsford is moving quickly to make a hire and reshuffle a staff member in the wake of Nick Jones joining the NFL's Los Angeles Rams as assistant offensive line coach.
Lunsford is moving Joe Graves to be his special teams coordinator and tight ends coach. He also is making the move to hire Favian Upshaw as the Eagles' running backs coach.
Upshaw is a former Georgia Southern fan-favorite player; Lunsford has been very intentional in filling his staff with as many former GSU standouts and up-and-coming coaches as he can.
Upshaw comes to Georgia Southern from Benedict College, where he was the quarterbacks coach.
Like Upshaw, who played for the Eagles within the past decade, Victor Cabral also is a staffer and former player. Cabral is the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator.
Cornerbacks coach Kevin Whitley also is a former Georgia Southern star. He earned All-American honors and helped the Eagles to a pair of FCS National Championships.
Wide receivers coach Derrick Sherman played elsewhere but returned to the GSU coaching family recently after he first served as an Eagles graduate assistant in 2014.
