Source: Youngstown State set to add veteran Big Ten and Big 12 coordinator and a former Michigan assistant

Sources tell FootballScoop that Doug Phillips and Youngstown State (FCS - OH) are on the verge of adding two experienced FBS assistants to their staff.

Veteran college offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, who most recently coordinated the offense at Penn State from 2021-23, is set to join the staff, source shares.

In addition to his time in Happy Valley, Yurcich also coordinated offenses at the FBS level at Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and Texas.

His unconventional hire in Stillwater back before the 2013 season made waves after Mike Gundy plucked him from the Division II ranks at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania, where his offenses were setting all kinds of offensive records.

Yurcich spent last season away from the sidelines after James Franklin and Penn State decided to part ways with the veteran play caller in mid-November of 2023 following a loss to Michigan.

Sources also share that Mike Zordich, who spent the last few seasons on staff at Central Michigan as their defensive backs coach, is expected to join the staff as well.

Before landing with the Chippewas, Zordich was the defensive backs coach at Michigan from 2015-20.

Landing with the Penguins will be a return to his roots for Zordich, as he coached the safeties for the program in 2014, and graduated from Chaney HS (Youngstown, OH) before going on to star at Penn State.
