Barry Odom has landed his defensive coordinator in West Lafayette, sources share.
Sources tell FootballScoop that Mike Scherer is heading east to join Barry Odom's staff now that UNLV has finished their season with a victory over Cal last night in their bowl game.
Scherer, one of the youngest coordinators in major college football, has spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at UNLV.
He helped the Rebels finish among the top 30 nationally in points per allowed per game this past fall as UNLV put together an impressive 11-3 mark.
Prior to joining the Rebels, he worked alongside Odom at Arkansas for two seasons, where he mentored the linebackers while Odom called the defense for the Razorbacks.
When Odom left for the UNLV job in early December of 2022, Sam Pittman called on the rising young coach to call their defense in the bowl game as interim defensive coordinator and Scherer left for Vegas shortly thereafter to take over play calling duties in the desert for his mentor.
Scherer, a former Missouri linebacker from 2012-16, began his coaching career under Odom as a graduate assistant at Mizzou in 2019.
