Sources: Big 12 defensive coordinator a strong candidate for same role at Texas Tech (Texas Tech Defensive Coordinator)

Houston defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Shiel Wood is a strong candidate for the same role at Texas Tech, sources told FootballScoop on Tuesday.

Wood recently completed his first season with the Cougars after coming over from Tulane with head coach Willie Fritz.

In his first season with the Cougars, Wood guided Houston's defense from 13th to second in the Big 12 in total yardage while chopping nine points per game off their scoring average.

If completed, the Texas Tech job would be Wood's fifth in six seasons. He spent 2020-21 on the Army staff coaching inside linebackers and safeties, 2022 as Troy's defensive coordinator and safeties coach, and then 2023 at Tulane and 2024 at Houston.

Wood started coaching college football as Wofford's wideouts coach in 2007, but since has coached safeties and linebackers, with stints as special teams coordinator at Georgia State and Georgia Tech. He also spent 2017 as Wofford's defensive coordinator.

Texas Tech is hunting for a new defensive coordinator after head coach Joey McGuire released Tim DeRuyter, along with defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Marcel Yates, on Sunday.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
