Sources: Boston College expected to hire former Power 5 head coach

Boston College is expected to hire former Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads, sources told FootballScoop on Friday.

Rhoads spent the 2022 season as the defensive coordinator on Mark Hudspeth's staff at Gulf Shores High School in Alabama. He was a defensive assistant at Ohio State in 2020, and the defensive coordinator at Arizona in 2020.

Rhoads has also coordinated defenses for Pittsburgh, Auburn, and Arkansas.

The 56-year-old's career dates back to a GA stint at Utah State beginning in 1989, following a playing career at Missouri Western. He has specialized in defensive back play, handling the secondary for Pacific, Iowa State, Arkansas and UCLA, in addition to his coordinator stints. BC head coach Jeff Hafley also handled defensive backs before landing the top job in Chestnut Hill in 2020.

The Eagles are 15-20 in Hafley's three seasons. BC went 6-5 in 2020 and 6-6 in '21, qualifying for bowls in both seasons before they were each canceled due to covid. Boston College went 3-9 in 2022, finishing 80th in pass efficiency defense.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.

Update: BC has announced the hire, along with a series of other moves.

Rhoads will coach outside linebackers, while associate head coach/defensive backs coach Azaar Abdul-Rahim and linebackers coach Sean Duggan will share co-coordinator duties.

On offense, quarterbacks coach Steve Shimko has been promoted to offensive coordinator, wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt to pass game coordinator, and Rob Chudzinksi to associate head coach for offense and offensive development.
