Sources: Cal nabs SEC coach for key role
Justin Wilcox rallied Cal this season, and he helped the Golden Bears earn a bowl berth.
Now as Wilcox continues to revamp his staff, the former University of Oregon star player has a key new addition to his offensive staff.
Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Wilcox and recently elevated offensive coordinator Mike Bloesch are adding Sterling Gilbert as Cal's new quarterbacks coach.
Gilbert spent the past season on Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss staff as a senior offensive analyst; previously he had helped coordinate the offense at Syracuse under Dino Babers, as well as at Texas, Tulsa and South Florida among other coaching stops and the high school ranks in the Lone Star State.
Bloesch and Gilbert have a shared history; they worked together both at the prep level at Temple High School in Texas as well as at Tulsa.
Cal recently lost Jake Spavital to run the offense at Baylor.
The Golden Bears finished their season on a three-game winning streak that helped them punch a ticket to the Independence Bowl opposite Big 12 foe Texas Tech later this month.
