Sources: Central Missouri expected to hire top coordinator on market (Northwest Missouri State Football)

Former Northwest Missouri State head coach Rich Wright is expected to join Central Missouri's staff as defensive coordinator, sources told FootballScoop on Friday.

Wright's 21-year run with NWMSU came to an end in November when the school allowed his contract to expire. In his two-plus decades at the school, Wright won a Division II national championship as the Bearcats' defensive line coach, won two more as defensive coordinator, and left the school as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association's winningest active coach, going 65-22 in seven seasons on the job.

Prior winners selected Wright as the FootballScoop Division II Coordinator of the Year in 2015 and 2016.

Wright joins a Central Missouri staff that went 9-3 in 2024, and is 20-5 over the past two seasons under head coach Josh Lamberson. FootballScoop reported that defensive coordinator Greg Jones stepped down from the CMU staff last month.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
