Michael Mutz is set to run his own defense -- and return to his roots in the process.
A San Antonio, Texas, native, Mutz is becoming the new defensive coordinator for Colby Carthel at Stephen F. Austin, multiple source tell FootballScoop.
Mutz has been a loyal assistant on the staffs of Willie Fritz throughout the past decade, joining Fritz's Georgia Southern staff in 2014 as the Eagles' linebackers coach.
He then has spent the entirety of Fritz's record-setting run at Tulane on staff as a defensive assistant as well.
After getting his coaching start at Southern Illinois, Mutz has on three separate occasions coached in the Lone Star State; he was on staff two different times at Sam Houston State, where he coached defensive backs and defensive linemen, and he also served as defensive coordinator at national junior college powerhouse Blinn.
