Sources confirm Bronco Mendenhall adding FCS coordinator to New Mexico staff

Sources confirm to FootballScoop that Bronco Mendenhall is adding a former Virginia quarterback to his staff at New Mexico.

Matt Johns, a former Cavaliers quarterback, is leaving his post as the quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator at William & Mary (FCS) to join Mendenhall's inaugural Lobos staff.

Johns spent the past four seasons with the Tribe mentoring their signal callers, adding the passing game coordinator title in 2022.

During his time at William & Mary he has helped quarterbacks rewrite the record books, establish one of the most respected and efficient passing attacks in FCS football, and garner numerous postseason accolades.

To fill his role, sources also confirm to FootballScoop that offensive coordinator Christian Taylor will move from running backs to quarterbacks. He previously coached the team's quarterbacks in 2009 before his career took him to stops at San Diego State, Michigan, San Diego, Illinois Wesleyan before a few seasons back at San Diego again.

He returned to William & Mary, where he played quarterback for the program from 2002-06, back in 2020.

Bruce Feldman has also reported the moves.

Taylor recently won the AFCA's Assistant Coach of the Year award for the FCS level and is widely considered a rising star in the profession after helping to lead the Tribe to two FCS semifinal appearances and FCS quarterfinals appearance.
