The ongoing trend of more and more veteran coaches, as well as up-and-coming young staffers, at Historically Black College and University football programs is again continuing with Eddie George’s ongoing rebuild at Tennessee State University.
Sources tell FootballScoop that college coaching veteran Scott Baumgartner is joining George’s TSU Tigers’ staff as the program’s new wide receivers coach.
It’s a dramatic geographical change of scenery for Baumgartner, a Mountain West Coaching veteran who worked extensively at both New Mexico and UNLV throughout the previous decade. Baumgartner also had a lengthy run at Nevada at the onset of his MWC tour. He initiated his career at Pacific, his alma mater, and also logged time at Central Missouri State in a career that has spanned more than 30 years.
His arrival in Nashville reflects another quality veteran coach for George, the former Ohio State and Tennessee Titans star running back who was hired atop the TSU program in April 2021.
TSU has showed steady progress in George’s two seasons; after it won just five games in 2019-20, the program has amassed a combined nine wins in George’s first two seasons.
The Tigers are set to open their third year under George Sept. 2 in a historic, first-of-its-kind meeting at Notre Dame – which likewise is coached by a former Ohio State star, ex-Buckeyes linebacker Marcus Freeman.
