Sources: Former Mike Leach, NFL QB Luke Falk emerges as top target for Northern Iowa OC job (Luke Falk)

Luke Falk set passing records under Mike Leach at Washington State, earning his way from walk-on quarterback to a multi-year orchestrator of the late innovator's offenses.

Falk is seemingly charting a similar climb in the college football coaching ranks.

Just a year after landing on NCAA Division II program Wingate's staff as a quarterbacks coach, the 29-year-old Falk is moving closer to becoming an NCAA Division I offensive coordinator.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Falk is the focus to run the offense at Football Championship Subdivision program Northern Iowa.

The two sides are working to finalize that deal, potentially in the next 24 hours, barring any unforeseen snags, sources tell FootballScoop.

UNI coach Mark Farley is among college football's most-tenured head coaches, having just wrapped up his 23rd season leading the Panthers.

An Utah native who initially specialized in individual prospect training after a brief professional career that included stops with the NFL's Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans, Falk immersed himself in college coaching a year ago when he landed on staff at Wingate.

He helped the Bulldogs average more than 27 points per game in 2023.

Northern Iowa tied for third place in the grueling Missouri Valley Conference last season, finishing 5-3 with a shutout of nationally ranked North Dakota long the way.

The Panthers have a couple of "money" games on their 2024 slate, with trips scheduled in September to both Nebraska and Hawaii.
