Sources: Former Alabama, Texas OC; ex-Houston head coach Major Applewhite emerges as Miami candidate (Alabama)

Mario Cristobal's ongoing quest to find the next offensive coordinator for Miami is taking another new turn Saturday.

Sources with direct knowledge tell FootballScoop that Cristobal and the Hurricanes are engaging today in talks with Major Applewhite.

A former star quarterback at the University of Texas who later served as the Longhorns' offensive coordinator, as well as Nick Saban's first offensive coordinator at Alabama, Applewhite in 2022 helped South Alabama to a record-breaking season as the offensive play-caller for Kane Wommack.

The Jaguars posted a 10-win campaign last fall as they doubled their win total from the previous year.

As head coach at the University of Houston throughout the 2017-18 seasons, Applewhite won 15 games and was head coach for three Cougars' bowl contests.

Overall, Applewhite has spent eight years of his almost two decades in coaching as an offensive play-caller, with his first stop at Rice University in 2006.

Miami has been seeking a replacement for Josh Gattis, who served as Cristobal's offensive coordinator in Cristobal's first season atop his alma mater.

But the Hurricanes struggled throughout the season on offense; they finished 97th in the nation in scoring at 23.6 points per game.
