Sources: Former FootballScoop Coordinator of the Year lands new FBS opportunity (shane montgomery)

Shane Montgomery, a former North Carolina State quarterback and FootballScoop’s 2019 FCS Coordinator of the Year, is landing a new Football Bowls Subdivision post.

Montgomery, who most recently had served as offensive coordinator for Maurice Linguist’s University of Buffalo program, is joining Mike Houston’s East Carolina staff as the Pirates’ senior offensive analyst.

It’s something of a natural pairing for Houston and Montgomery, who both coached to considerable success at James Madison but did not see their time at the now-FBS program overlap. Houston was JMU’s head coach from 2016-18; Montgomery was the Dukes’ offensive play-caller from 2019-20, winning FootballScoop’s top FCS coordinator award in his first year at the program.

In addition to his recent work at Buffalo and James Madison, Montgomery also has been the offensive coordinator at Akron, Youngstown State and Charlotte.

Starting his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant for the Wolfpack, Montgomery rose to the level of head coach at Mid-American Conference program Miami (Ohio) from 2005-08.

East Carolina has among the nation’s most daunting three-game stretches to open its season, with a road trip Sept. 2 to back-to-back College Football Playoff participant Michigan and a home game the next week against a rising Marshall program. The Pirates then travel to regional rival Appalachian State the following week.

The Pirates finished their 2022 8-5, closing on a 5-2 tear that was punctuated by a bowl win against Coastal Carolina.
