Sources: Georgia State, new head coach Dell McGee eyeing Kevin Sherrer for key defensive post (Shawn Elliott)

Kevin Sherrer, who's gleaned extensive coaching experience in the Southeastern Conference at Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, as well as owning NFL experience, is being targeted for a top defensive assistant coaching position at Georgia State, several sources tell FootballScoop.

Dell McGee, Georgia State's new head coach, is a former colleague of Sherrer; the two previously worked together under Kirby Smart at the University of Georgia last decade.

Though no deal is done and McGee still is formulating his new Georgia State staff, including potential holdovers and newcomers, Sherrer could potentially slot into the defensive coordinator role, if both sides reach agreement.

Sherrer, Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator in 2023, has coordinated defenses at the FBS level at Tech, South Alabama and for Jeremy Pruitt at Tennessee in 2018. Tyler Santucci, a former assistant at Notre Dame, Duke and Texas A&M, is set to lead the Georgia Tech defense in 2024.

Boosting his collegiate experience, Sherrer - an Alabama native who played for the Crimson Tide in the mid-1990s -- spent a pair of years coaching in the NFL for the New York Giants.

McGee was Georgia's assistant head coach and running backs coach in 2016-17, the same time that Sherrer served as the outside linebackers coach for the Bulldogs.

Sherrer also has coached at the prep level in his native Alabama and first broke into major-college football as a personnel executive under Nick Saban at Alabama.

McGee is piecing together his inaugural Georgia State staff after being hired as replacement to Shawn Elliott, who exited the program to become an assistant coach at South Carolina under Shane Beamer.

Per terms of Elliott's previous pact at Georgia State, it was indicated to FootballScoop that he was expected to owe an $300,000 exit fee for his early departure.

McGee, FootballScoop has learned, has garnered a five-year contract worth approximately $850,000 per year.

Former Georgia and Tennessee offensive coordinator Jim Chaney was in Atlanta today and is a strong candidate for a senior role on the offensive side of the ball as well sources share.
