The move reunites a pair that worked together at Auburn from 2016-17 and at Tulsa in 2007-08, winning an SEC West title in 2017. Hand left Auburn for Texas, where he spent three seasons before Tom Herman's staff was fired following the 2020 campaign.
Hand had previously agreed to join Charlotte's staff. 49ers head coach Will Healy dubbed the move a "home run hire."
"I'm so excited to be able to work with Herb Hand," said Healy. "He has always been one of my favorites in this profession and has been an incredible mentor to me. He is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country and it says a lot about our program that we were able to make such a home run hire. He's a great coach, a great person and a great fit for our staff! Welcome to Charlotte, Hand Family!"
Hand joins another former Auburn staffer who took another job this offseason now joining the new Gus Bunch in Orlando. Former Tigers linebackers coach Travis Williams, who'd taken the linebackers job at Miami, is expected to be UCF's defensive coordinator.
In addition to Auburn, Texas and Tulsa, Hand has also coached O-lines for Vanderbilt and Penn State.
