Sources: Hugh Freeze adding former Group of 5 head coach to Auburn staff (chad lunsford)

Hugh Freeze is bringing Chad Lunsford aboard as special teams coordinator, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Wednesday. CBS Sports first reported the move.

Lunsford comes to The Plains from Florida Atlantic, where he was the special teams coordinator, tight ends coach and interim head coach following Tom Herman's firing. He spent the past three years in Boca Raton coaching special teams and tight ends.

Prior to that, Lunsford was the head coach at Georgia Southern. A mid-season hiring in 2017, he led the Eagles to two wins following an 0-6 start, which was enough to earn him the full-time job. Georgia Southern went 10-3 with a Camellia Bowl win 2018, 7-6 in 2019, and then 8-5 with a New Orleans Bowl victory in 2020. He was fired following a 1-3 start to the 2021 season.

Lunsford started coaching as an undergraduate at Georgia College in 1996 and has coordinated special teams at Georgia Military College in addition to Georgia Southern and, now, Auburn.
