Sources: Ivy League assistant Michael McCarthy to join NFL's New England Patriots (mike mccarthy)

As Jerod Mayo, former University of Tennessee All-America and All-SEC standout, continues to assemble his inaugural New England Patriots staff, he's making a veteran addition to the offensive staff, sources tell FootballScoop.

Michael McCarthy, most recently the Brown Bears offensive line coach and a former NFL assistant, is returning to the pros to serve the Patriots as an offensive assistant, sources shared with FootballScoop Wednesday.

Previously working in the NFL with the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, McCarthy also has Power 5 collegiate experience from time with multiple stints at Rutgers University.

Additionally, McCarthy has coached at Tulane, Western Michigan and North Carolina Central before an extending run in which he helped Brown produce some staunch rushing units the past four seasons in the Ivy League.

Mayo was hired in January to replace the legendary Bill Belichick, and he's quickly placed his own stamp on the New England coaching staff.

He hired former star Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback Alex Van Pelt as the team's new offensive coordinator and made several additional moves during the transition.

The Patriots, after a disastrous 4-13 2023 campaign, are slated to have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
