Sources: Ivy League program hiring new coordinator (Columbia)

A week into the job as Columbia's new head coach, Jon Poppe is finalizing a hire to head up the third phase of the Lions program.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Poppe is tabbing Garrett McLaughlin as Columbia's new special teams coordinator.

Honored in 2022 as a 'Special Teams Coach on the Rise' by the Our Coaching Network, McLaughlin spent the past two seasons of his career on staff at New Hampshire, where he coordinated special teams for that program and also coached multiple all-conference selections at the defensive end position.

McLaughlin, who started his coaching as a student assistant at his alma mater, Syracuse, has more than five years' experience heading up special teams.

His previous career coaching stops also include Bates College, Wagner College, New Haven and Buffalo State.

Columbia hired Poppe earlier this month after a 2023 season with an interim coach atop the program. The Lions finished just 3-7 overall, a mark that included a last-place finish in the Ivy League at 1-6.
