Sources: James Madison to hire one of FCS's top defensive coordinators (Dave Plungas)

James Madison is expected to hire Robert Morris (FCS - PA) defensive coordinator Dave Plungas as linebackers coach and run game coordinator, sources told FootballScoop on Wednesday.

Plungas spent seven seasons as RMU's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. In 2024, the Colonials led the Northeast Conference in scoring at 20.2 points per game, which ranked 17th in FCS. RMU was also 15th nationally in passing efficiency, 18th in first downs allowed, and in the top 35 nationally in total defense, passing defense, and third down defense.

Plungas was part of a staff that stopped a 9-season losing streak in 2019, going 7-5 with a 6-1 mark in NEC play. RMU also enjoyed a 7-5 record last fall.

James Madison head coach Bob Chesney hired Colin Hitschler as the Dukes' defensive coordinator earlier this month after previous coordinator Lyle Hemphill joined Texas A&M's staff in January.

JMU went 9-4 in 2024, the program's 22nd consecutive non-losing season. The program is 28-9 since moving to FBS in 2022.
