Kevin Sumlin, the former Arizona and Texas A&M head coach who's served in a co-offensive coordinator and associate head coach at Maryland, is pondering his coaching plans while stepping out of his on-field duties, multiple sources tell FootballScoop.
Having just finished his second season on Mike Locksley's Maryland Terps staff, the 60-year-old Sumlin has the option to remain on the Maryland staff in an off-the-field capacity after electing to step away from his on-field duties, which also include being the program's tight ends coach in 2023-24.
An Alabama native with 95 career wins as an FBS head coach, Sumlin can continue coaching or elect for retirement. His career earnings include an initial $30-million pact to head up the Texas A&M program as well as his substantial, multimillion-dollar deal from heading up the Arizona Wildcats organization.
He's been making approximately $500,000 in his role at Maryland.
Sumlin, a linebacker at Purdue in the mid-1980s, also boasts assistant coaching stops at Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, Oklahoma and his alma mater, as well as Maryland.
Locksley is facing his most significant offseason in his return to Maryland. After a disastrous 4-8 campaign featuring just a single Big Ten Conference victory, Locksley now needs at least a new defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and now replacement for Sumlin's post.
Maryland opens its 2025 season Aug. 30 at home against FAU but also faces Big Ten tilts against Wisconsin, Washington, Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan -- though the Terps manage to miss 2024 College Football Playoff participants Oregon, Penn State and reigning national title-winner Ohio State.
