Sources: Lamar to hire FBS assistant as head coach (Featured)

San Diego State quarterbacks coach Blane Morgan will be the new head coach at Lamar, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.

Lamar is an FCS school in Beaumont, Texas. The Cardinals compete in the Southland Conference.

A native of Addison, Texas, in the Dallas area, Morgan played at Air Force, where he went 19-3 as the Falcons' starting quarterback. He coached at his alma mater from 2003-14, the final eight seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Morgan then joined Rocky Long's staff in San Diego as quarterbacks coach, where he has remained ever since. He helped the Aztecs to back-to-back 11-win, Mountain West championship seasons in 2015-16.

Lamar went 4-8 in 2019, dropping their final five games. Head coach Mike Schultz was not retained on Nov. 25.

Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck and Southern Miss co-offensive coordinator Scotty Walden were also candidates for the position.
