Sources: Major Applewhite pulls U-turn on Arkansas State, will now coordinate different Sun Belt school (Featured)

Major Applewhite will not be the offensive coordinator at Arkansas State and will instead lead the offense at South Alabama, sources told FootballScoop on Monday.

Applewhite previously had a verbal agreement to join Butch Jones, whom he worked alongside on Alabama's support staff for the past two seasons.

However, we're told Applewhite had a change of heart and will now head to Mobile instead of Jonesboro. Applewhite never signed a contract with Arkansas State.

South Alabama and Arkansas State will play annually as rivals in the Sun Belt's West Division.

Wommack and Applewhite have never worked together previously. Their paths have only crossed once, a 2013 Ole Miss win over Texas when Wommack was the Rebels' safeties coach and Applewhite the Longhorns' offensive coordinator.

In addition to Texas, Applewhite has coordinator experience at Rice, Alabama and Houston. He was Houston's head coach from 2017-18, going 15-11.

We reported last night that McGill-Toolen head coach Earnest Hill will coach running backs for South. Bruce Feldman added Gordon Steele will coach offensive line and Rob Ezell will coach tight ends. We can confirm those hires. Receivers remains open at this time sources tell us.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.

Update> The University has now confirmed these hires.
