Sources: Miami's Wright bolting Hurricanes for NFL opportunity (rod wright)

Rod Wright, a former All-America standout-player at the University of Texas, is making a de facto homecoming.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Wright is exiting Mario Cristobal's Miami Hurricanes' program for a chance to coach in the NFL.

Per sources, Wright is going to become an assistant coaching working with the defensive line of the Houston Texans.

Late last month, Houston hired former Alabama star linebacker DeMeco Ryans as the team's new head coach.

For Wright, who grew up in the Lone Star State and earned All-Big 12 conference accolades for three-straight seasons with the Longhorns, it's another impressive step up in his career.

A former NFL Draft pick of the Miami Dolphins who spent several seasons in the league, Wright has climbed quickly through the coaching ranks.

He's been on staff at Sam Houston State, East Carolina and spent the 2022 season on Cristobal's Hurricanes' staff. Wright also became a nationally-known coach from his work along the defensive front with the linemen at UTSA.

Additionally, Wright got his start in coaching as a student-assistant coach at his alma mater, Texas, and has twice been selected for the prestigious Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship.
