Sources: NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson lands lucrative new contract extension (contract extension)

Tony Gibson, who's wrapping up his fifth season as a defensive coordinator for North Carolina State, is set to remain with the Wolfpack for several more years.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Gibson is in agreement with NC State officials and head coach Dave Doeren on a new, three-year contract extension worth at least $1.5 million per year.

Gibson's Wolfpack defense was fourth in the ACC and 24th nationally in 2023, as it allowed a mere 20.2 points per game.

Gibson's guaranteed $1.5m per-year deal does not reflect the potential for additional compensation through postseason appearances and other incentives.

A former Broyles Award candidate who's coached at Michigan, Pittsburgh and West Virginia among other stops, Gibson helped tutor Payton Wilson this year to All-America status and the Bednarik and Butkus awards, two of college football's most distinguished honors for an defensive player.

The Wolfpack face Kansas State Thursday in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando, Florida, with a chance to secure what would become just the NC State program's second all-time 10-win season.

Since Gibson took sole command of the Pack defense prior to the 2020 season, he has helped the program to 34 wins in what has become the most success four-year run in school history.

A West Virginia native and Glenville State graduate, Gibson has closed in on nearly 30 years' service as a collegiate coach.
